Vascular Biology and Red Blood Cells
Research areas: Sickle Cell Diseases, Blood Rheology, Altitude, Inflammation, Exercise, Microcirculation.
In the preceding laboratory accreditation, we mainly focused our research activities on sickle cell disease (SCD) and atherosclerosis. In the next accreditation, we will work on SCD and other red blood cell (RBC) diseases, such as spherocytosis, in close collaboration with the Constitutive Referal Center on Rare RBC Diseases in Lyon (lead by Pr A Hot, Academic Hospital of Lyon). Moreover, we have started between 2014 and 2020 several studies to test the effects of 1) altitude exposure and 2) exercise (acute and chronic) in athletes and SCD patients, on RBC adaptations and vascular function. We will continue developing these topics. Our main activities are devoted to test the consequences of pathophysiological and physiological modifications of red blood cells on the vascular function, clinical status and performance in hematological diseases, high altitude residents and healthy individuals.
We will focus on two main topics : 1) hemoglobinopathies and RBC membrane diseases 2) hematological and vascular adaptations in physiological conditions (exercise and altitude). The extreme hematological changes between these situations (chronic anemia in hemoglobin/RBC diseases and polycythemia in high altitude residents) will allow us to better understand the consequences of hematological and blood rheological changes on vascular function and health.
